100 Ultimate Blues Riffs for Alto Saxophone is written by internationally acclaimed author and instructor Andrew D. Gordon. This product is an exhaustive guide to the various phrases or “riffs" that make up Blues saxophone playing, both from a rhythmic and soloing standpoint. This book is ideal for most levels of musicianship, from the beginner/intermediate student who is interested in understanding and playing the Blues to more advanced players that need new ideas to help stimulate their creativity. It is also useful as a tool for improving one’s sight reading abilities with the examples being in many different keys and rhythms. The 12 bar Blues progression and the Blues scale are also explained. Included with this book is a CD with each example recorded twice. The first version of each example has the saxophone playing along with a rhythm section and the second version just has the rhythm section playing so that the saxophonist can play along. An optional MIDI disk in General MIDI format is available.

JAZZ SOLOIST SERIES FOR Eb BOOK/CD
Features:
The Jazz Solo Series for "Eb" instruments, including alto saxophone, by Mark Vega is a great instructional tool for musicians and music students to learn or improve their improvisational abilities in the jazz - swing idiom. There are 66 examples in the book, starting at a somewhat easy level and gradually increasing in difficulty throughout the book. This book is divided into four sections: Section one, tracks 1 through 36 cover all twelve keys using 11-V-1 and 11-V-111-V1-11-V-1 chord progressions. Section two, tracks 37 through 60 cover all twelve keys using 1-V1-11-V-111-b111-11-V-1 chord progressions. Section three, tracks 61 through 66 are complete worked out solos over the chord changes to the popular Jazz standards “Stella By Starlight", “Take the A Train" and “There Will Never Be Another You." There are two solos for each of these three examples, an easy version followed by a more difficult one. The first version being a prime example of how to approach medium swing Jazz and the second version covering the more complex and demanding style of Bebop Jazz with its faster tempos and more difficult melodic and harmonic note choices. Section four, tracks 67, 68 and 69 are repeated choruses of the chord progressions to the above mentioned songs for extended practice. Please refer to the end of the book for a selected discography of Mark's favorite Jazz albums featuring great soloists.

Mark Vega's book is really interesting. There are good riffs inside with an interesting graduation in difficulty. The CD is also very helpful. I'm waiting for the Midi Files to be able to transpose and practice the different riffs in every key. S. Bassetti Equador
I find a lot of jazz material difficult to get my head around (and I don't consider myself to be stupid). A lot of what in essence are simple concepts can be made to sound extremely difficult eg. tri tone substitution. This book is concise and clearly set out. The print both in the notation and text is easily readable. More important, the contents of the text is easy to take on board. S.H.

ULTRA SMOOTH JAZZ GROOVES FOR Eb

Internationally renowned authors, musicians and recording artists, Frank Villafranca and Andrew D. Gordon, have composed a collection of grooves and melodies in the Smooth Jazz Genre creating an exciting supplemental jazz study series for beginner, intermediate and advanced jazz students and musicians.

The smooth jazz grooves in this 46 page book feature a variety of contemporary rhythm section styles including R&B, Jazz, Funk, Top 40, Rock, Gospel, Hip Hop and Latin. These stylistic influences are frequently associated with smooth jazz. On each of the 20 tracks, the groove is separated into 3 melodic ideas. Each melodic idea (example or riff) is played first, by the saxophone with the groove, followed by just the rhythm section groove, without sax. The 1st example is usually the easiest, the 2nd slightly harder and the 3rd the most difficult.
Versions for each groove are available as midi files or extended MP3 files where the rhythm tracks for each groove are recorded for approximately 2 minutes.
