DANNY BOY
Features:
The magical setting of this cherished melody combines exquisite orchestration with dramatic harmonies. At times, the arrangement is quite plaintive sounding, which is balanced with more contemporary harmonies and powerful countermelodies. Endless opportunities for music making abound, and there certainly will not be a dry eye in the house when the group plays the final chord after a haunting violin solo. Inspirational!
This arrangement is a setting of Londonderry Air, the popular anthem from northern Ireland. The tune was given lyrics in 1913 by an English lawyer named Frederick Edward Weatherly, and would then become known as Danny Boy.

![Fiddle Like the Dickens! [String Orchestra]](/Master/images/Product/icon/1026-00-31531.jpg) |
Fiddle Like the Dickens! [String Orchestra]
Features:
Fiddle tunes and carols played in fiddle style! In his 1843 masterpiece, A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens describes the Christmas party and the first song the fiddler played after dinner. This medley starts the same way, with the old English slip jig, "Sir Roger De Coverly," as played by three solo fiddlers (2 violins and one viola), followed by "The Wassail Song," a fiddling version of "Angels We Have Heard on High." Next, the hornpipe "The Rights of Man" is cleverly joined to "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and the rousing finale is the English jig/carol, "I Saw Three Ships!" It’s great fun!

ICE SCULPTURES
Features:
Premiered at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, this predominately lyrical work draws its inspiration from ice hotels - temporary hotels made entirely of ice and snow. Strong elements of film scoring prevail throughout the work as it tells the story of the construction, visitors, and eventual melting of the hotel. There are extensive opportunities to feature both your cello soloist and cello section. A very unique work that will captivate your audience.
The original concept of this work was centered around the magnificent ice sculptures that I had seen at various venues throughout my life. It was to reflect everything from simple platters of food to elaborate works of art. As I began researching the topic, I stumbled upon the incredible concept of ice hotels - temporary hotels made entirely of snow and sculpted blocks of ice. There are a handful of these amazing creations throughout the world, reconstructed each year because of their dependence on subzero temperatures during construction and operation. As I continued researching, the scope of the piece changed a bit. While still paying homage to ice sculptures, I incorporated the more dramatic concept of ice hotels as well as the many people that set out to visit these unique destinations. Thus, this work depicts both the construction of the ice hotel, the artwork that exists inside of it, and the spirit of the people tha lodge within. It begins from nothing but blocks of ice and creative ideas. As the architecture begins to come together, the artwork soon comes to life, telling not only its own story but the story of the individuals who created it. It also reflects the adventure and heart of those who come to experience these amazing creations in extreme conditions. Toward the end of the work, the music becomes quite soft and reminiscent as the inevitable happens. The ice melts, taking all of its stories and memories with it until the following year when new stories are told.

Lion City
Features:
Experience the diverse cultures of Singapore ("Lion City") in a whirlwind of sonorities! From the opening harmonic glissandos to the innovative use of instruments (to imitate authentic instruments such as the ehru, pipa, and gamelan), this work is brilliantly orchestrated. Add in rhythmic intensity and soaring themes, and you have a sonic experience that many will not believe possible from a string orchestra. Sensational!
Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Western cultures make up the unique and inspiring country of Singapore. Its history dates as far back as the 11th century, but it was in the 13th century that a Sumatran prince gave this small island the name Singa pura, or Lion City, because of a creature he believed to be a lion walking on its shores. Lion City is reflective of the many cultures that make up Singapore. The beginning starts with an ancient rainstorm, introducing Malay and Indian themes. Traditional instruments like the gamelan are portrayed by the col legno and pizzicato. Con fuoco depicts the rapid growth and booming economy that Singapore is known for today. East meets West as Chinese and contemporary melodies play out. A hint of the Malay theme returns at the very end.

![March from Suite No. 1 [String Orchestra]](/Master/images/Product/icon/1026-00-31596.jpg) |
March from Suite No. 1 [String Orchestra]
Features:
This lively march comes to us from one of Holst’s most popular works, the First Suite in E flat for Military Band written in 1909. Two contrasting themes a crisp, marcato in D and a lyrical, legato theme in G thrill listeners. The powerful finale of the march, back in D, uses both melodies layered on top of one another. The lyrical section features the cellos and violas and all parts are interesting.

 ![Mercurius [String Orchestra]](/Master/images/Product/icon/1026-00-31602.jpg) |
Mercurius [String Orchestra]
Features:
"Mercurius" is a medieval Latin noun used to describe messengers, of which the Roman god Mercury is most famous. Eloquence and swiftness are characteristics attributed to these couriers and that is reflected in this piece. The forward motion of Mercurius is a constant in the bass part while the melody floats above, first in octaves, then as a duet, in a smooth flowing manner. The harmony is realized in conjunction with the rhythmic pattern of the bass to convey the purpose of this "bearer of news."
