Afternoon on a Hill
Features:
Colin Britt's exquisite setting of Millay's touching poem requires a flexible tempo with plenty of gentle rubato to give the effect of a poem being spoken by an accomplished orator. Care should be taken to maintain excellent chordal balance however the voices are divided. Make sure there is enough tenor one on the third beat of measure 33 for instance and not too much of any voice part where they combine again after having been divided.

Those Who Wait upon the Lord
Features:
Once you begin hearing this piece you are drawn in...you want to sing it. The ?eagle's wings? text is one of the most frequently set to music, and yet this one sounds like it has always been there, but not revealed until now. The essence of ?wait? is captured in the opening section, which gives way to a new tempo, building with the ?mounting on wings.? The true soaring takes place with a 12/8 meter, the voices building in triumph. A final return to the ?waiting? theme provides an assurance that has permeated the entire composition. Excellent for church and school.

Wayfarin' Stranger

When I Have Sung My Songs to You-Stroope-SATB
Features:
Written in 1934, ?When I Have Sung My Songs? is arguably Charles' most famous solo song and, to this day, often closes vocal recitals. (He wrote both the music and the lyrics to the solo version.) His style of writing bridged the gap between Cole Porter and the more classical art song of the day. Audiences have long enjoyed his expressive melodies (with ample rubato), and his ?cross-over? style of popular and classical.
Z. Randall Stroope set the lyrics of Charles' work to a new melody in an unaccompanied mixed chorus medium. Great effort was made to maintain the natural simplicity and innate expressive character of Charles' lyrics.
