6 Introduzioni Teatrali Op. 4 Nos. 1-6
Features:
For string orchestra and basso continuo. With regard to style, these short symphonies of 1735 resemble the Neapolitan opera buffa, the descriptive title implying the beginning of stage works. Locatelli's works were well known throughout Europe until the end of the 18th century, although the composer led a very secluded life. He had no students and never performed in public. In his adopted city of Amsterdam he worked freelance, without allegiance to church or court, an unusual arrangement for a composer of the era.

ICE SCULPTURES
Features:
Premiered at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, this predominately lyrical work draws its inspiration from ice hotels - temporary hotels made entirely of ice and snow. Strong elements of film scoring prevail throughout the work as it tells the story of the construction, visitors, and eventual melting of the hotel. There are extensive opportunities to feature both your cello soloist and cello section. A very unique work that will captivate your audience.
The original concept of this work was centered around the magnificent ice sculptures that I had seen at various venues throughout my life. It was to reflect everything from simple platters of food to elaborate works of art. As I began researching the topic, I stumbled upon the incredible concept of ice hotels - temporary hotels made entirely of snow and sculpted blocks of ice. There are a handful of these amazing creations throughout the world, reconstructed each year because of their dependence on subzero temperatures during construction and operation. As I continued researching, the scope of the piece changed a bit. While still paying homage to ice sculptures, I incorporated the more dramatic concept of ice hotels as well as the many people that set out to visit these unique destinations. Thus, this work depicts both the construction of the ice hotel, the artwork that exists inside of it, and the spirit of the people tha lodge within. It begins from nothing but blocks of ice and creative ideas. As the architecture begins to come together, the artwork soon comes to life, telling not only its own story but the story of the individuals who created it. It also reflects the adventure and heart of those who come to experience these amazing creations in extreme conditions. Toward the end of the work, the music becomes quite soft and reminiscent as the inevitable happens. The ice melts, taking all of its stories and memories with it until the following year when new stories are told.

In The Bleak Midwinter (Based On Cranham)
Features:
In the Bleak Midwinter was written by English poet Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) for inclusion in her collection "Poetical Works." This text then gained great popularity when it was paired with Cranham in The English Hymnal, 1906. Written by Gustav Holst (1874-1934), Cranham was composed specifically for this text. This grade 1 setting of the tranquil tune uses muted strings to portray the quiet calm of the winter season. Duration 2:55.

Melody on Two Notes and The Whistling Kettle [String Orchestra]
Features:
What fun! With typical tongue-in-cheek humor, these two short and easy pieces will become an adorable addition to the school repertoire. Presented here as a two-movement piece, the first tune passes the simple two-note melody between sections, all very easy with a few more challenging notes for the first violins. The second piece also features the first violins and is very playable for second year students. Play them together or individually for a brief but cute interlude!

Rhythmic Snapshots of Christmas
Features:
This contemporary and spirited arrangement is based on Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella. As the title suggests, the entire work thrives on rhythmic pulse. As the piece develops, pieces of the two carols are increasingly woven together, shifting seamlessly between the two at times. From the rhythmic opening to the sweeping lines that ensue, this is certain to be a memorable part of your winter program!
This contemporary and spirited arrangement is based on Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella. The title comes from the rhythmic treatment of the opening carol. The rhythmic bass line provides unity and is utilized throughout the piece, even serving as a rhythmic and tonal pedal point during the waltzlike presentation of the second carol. Although Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is presented in 3/4 time, the melody remains as true to the original as possible, allowing the listener to sing the tune without omitting any lyrics.

Russian Easter Overture
Features:
This dynamic arrangement fully captures the mood and spirit embodied in Rimsky-Korsakov’s original opus. Shortened to be more accessible, the piece includes solos for violin and viola before moving into the Allegro section. Expanded orchestration makes this ideal for large ensembles and festivals. A symphonic masterwork!
Russian Easter Overture was the third in a series of well-known and popular orchestral works written within about a year. The other works were Capriccio Espagnol and the symphonic suite Scheherazade. The underlying tunes come from the Russian Orthodox liturgy, based on a collection of old Russian Orthodox canticles. This arrangement successfully captures the mood and spirit embodied in Rimsky-Korsakov's original opus, while at the same time, brings this wonderful work into an accessible realm for students at the advanced high school level.

Wood Splitter Fanfare
Features:
Immediately command your audience’s attention with this thrilling fanfare that includes sweeping lines, forceful rhythms, and counterpoint - and all in a short grade 2.5 that is quite achievable! Your group will sound like a symphony orchestra as the music drives through several sections before a flurry of chords bring the work to an exciting conclusion. Intense!
The title of this work stems from an incident that I witnessed while serving as a guest conductor for the Deer Path Middle Orchestra in Lake Forest, Illinois. While waiting to premiere a new work (To Tame the Raging Rapids) with the group, I watched the orchestra perform on stage. A viola player went to put her instrument into playing position and the chin rest slipped off. She lost her grip on the instrument, and I watched in horror as the instrument fell to the ground. Even worse, the entire instrument cracked, from the tailpiece to the top. Brett Pepowski was only in 8th grade and could have completely fallen apart on stage, but I watched with amazement at how calmly she picked up her instrument and waited for others to finish. At that point, others were able to quickly find another viola, and she finished the entire program. This is a reminder of how we all experience unfortunate incidents, but it is in the aftermath of those experiences where we see the true definition of our character. This piece is a way to sustain that music-making, so we can leave the frustrating moments behind and celebrate all that it means to be a true musician.
