100 ULTIMATE JAZZ RIFFS
Features:
Due to the runaway success of the 100 Ultimate Blues Riffs, Andrew D. Gordon's latest book "100 Ultimate Jazz Riffs" consists of, as the title suggests, 100 Jazz riffs based on common chord progressions used in jazz such as the II-V-I, III-VI-II-V etc.
There are five separate ections: Jazz Swing, Jazz Ballad, Jazz Funk, Jazz Waltz and Latin Jazz. Each musical example has a single note improvised melody line with the right hand and chord accompaniment with the left hand. At the end of the book there is the chord progression for the popular jazz standard "Blue Moon" showing you how to use various examples from the 100 riffs to create an improvised solo over the chord progression.
By demonstrating this technique you can pick most jazz standards and create your own improvisational ideas using the book.
The CD is recorded with the right hand piano part on the right channel and the left hand piano part on the left channel (bass and drums on both channels) with most of the examples recorded at normal and slowed down tempos. An absolute must for musicians learning and playing various jazz styles.
Customer Comment About This Book:
Hi, I have purchased your " 100 ultimate riff " book which I must say is one of the best books I have ever come across period! as it has enabled me to achieve that Jazzy sound that I have been searching for the last 7 years. Even the Jazz tutor that I have had in the past have not been able to show me what your book has shown me.... Just like yourself I have learned to play and improvise over the Blues but when it came to improvise over songs like "Misty" and " Someone to watch over me " I was completely lost for Notes to play that would sound good & Jazzy . I had nearly given up hope in even trying to be a Jazz piano player for the last 7 years but Many thanks to you and your wonderful book I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! I would just like to say that I am very very satisfied with your book and I think in is worth its weight in gold...Many Many Thanks Have A Nice Day Rgrds.
Danny Manini London England
I enjoy much the Chord progressions you chose and the scale relations that were picked I am well versed in this area and I feel you covered it nicely. Would have liked a little more funk and latin but I have additional books of yours that handle that. I find your books are useful for my own creative juices by starting with one of your grooves and then I toy with it until I have recreated something new from it. Your music has an uncanny ability to reinvent itself easily. There is another book of yours on different styles that I will be purchasing in the near future. D.H.
I am a private instructor of piano and guitar in Fishers, IN and I absolutely love everything that you've put on the market so far. I especially like and use your 100 ultimate blues and jazz licks as well as the piano bass lines book. I think you're doing a great job and I hope you will remember me because I also use Scott 'the piano guy' Houston's approach and have more or less integrated his beginning methods with your licks in my everyday teaching approach. C.H.

Customer Comments About This Book:
Hello Andrew Gordon, While in Michigan for Thanksgiving I purchased your book "Outstanding Blues and Jazz Compositions for Piano/Keyboards" at Elderly Music in Lansing. The book was published in 1990. Thanks for having the generosity and patience to teach. The book actually begins at my level ! and I am having a great time with it. Tonight as I plowed through tedious scales and arpeggios, I kept our friend George Harrison in mind. Best regards, Elizabeth

A Living Legacy
Features:
Created on the occasion of the Juilliard School's 100th anniversary in 2005, this book offers an unprecedented look at Juilliard's historic stringed instrument collection. The collection, assembled over the course of the last century through generous gifts of instruments and funds to the school, is vividly represented by photographic and narrative accounts of 25 instruments (and three bows) of particular historic interest by such illustrious makers as Amati, Bergonzi, Guadagnini, Guarneri, Stradivari, and others, as well as reproductions of historic documents and an annotated list of other instruments and bows. Among the featured instruments are a Stradivarius violin that once belonged to a Russian czar and was later owned by Avery Fisher, a Guarneri del Gesù violin played by a member of the Viennese quartet that premiered many of Beethoven's and Schubert's works in that genre, and a Stradivarius cello previously owned by Hugo Becker, head of the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. Short essays sketch the history of Juilliard and its illustrious string department, and describe the crucial role of the Instrumental Loan Program, which allows students to borrow instruments for special performances and competitions as well as for longer-term use. The book includes a foreword by renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, a Juilliard alumnus and holder of the school's Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair since 1999.

Chopin - A Listener's Guide to the Master of the Piano
Features:
Frédéric Chopin died a famous man with his place in the musical pantheon secure. Yet the works that were once most popular tended to be his lightest and least challenging, leading many listeners and critics to view him as a miniaturist and composer for the salon. The bold pieces now revered as his masterpieces-the epic and tragic structures of the ballades, scherzos, polonaises, and sonatas, and the compact but daring preludes and mazurkas-were rarely played and poorly understood. In fact, a larger proportion of Chopin's pieces are now in the active repertory than that of any composer. Chopin - A Listener's Guide to the Master of the Piano takes a detailed tour through the life and oeuvre of the sovereign master of the keyboard. The composer's metabolic adaptation of the melodic structures of Italian opera and the folk music of his native Poland for the resources of the piano are examined in detail, as are the originality and boldness he displayed throughout his tragically short, astonishing career. The book is accompanied by a CD containing 15 complete compositions (and one full movement from his Piano Sonata No. 2) performed by pianist Idil Biret, from her complete survey of the composer's music on the Naxos label.
