Features:
As the Eagle Soars is a work which ranges in tempo from Adagio to Moderato and is based on two generally stepwise melodic ideas. From the bare textural beginning (fllute solo with clarinets accompanying), the texture, tempo and volume continuously build toward a grandiose climax.
Lush harmonies and many sections of delicate, colorful percussion writing enhance the overall effect of this poignant, yet uplifting work for young band. The eagle programmatically represents the soul of man rising from its temporary residence on earth to its ultimate home in heaven.
The composition was commissioned by the Crossett, Arkansas High School and Junior High Bands, C.T. Foster and John McLaren, Directors.
